Urban League to Hold 19th Annual Whitney Young Dinner April 23, 2009 at Portsmouth Renaissance Hotel

Sponsored by

(Portsmouth, VA) -- The Urban League of Hampton Roads will hold its 19th Annual Whitney M. Young, Jr. Dinner on Thursday, April 23, 2009 at the Renaissance Hotel in Portsmouth. Festivities begin at 5:30 p.m. with a Silent Auction. The reception and dinner will begin at 6 p.m.

The 19th Annual Whitney M. Young, Jr. Dinner will feature an “Oscar-style” awards presentation program; Cox GM/SVP Gary McCollum, former Virginia Beach City Councilwoman Louisa Strayhorn and Towne Bank Executive Vice President Tom Hasty have been instrumental in creating the new process and approach for the awards program.

“Area businesses, community and educational institutions in Hampton Roads will be the focal point of the dinner. Attention will focus on them and all of the great work being done to uplift the legacy of Whitney Young,” said Strayhorn. “Our goal is to create excitement and anticipation of the event and to ensure that the very top organizations in the community are awarded for their diversity and civic engagement practices,” she added.

Awards will be presented in the following categories:
1.      Whitney M. Young Jr. Award: for an international or national company that has made significant progress diversifying its workforce at the management and non-management levels.

2.      Phillip Randolph Award: for a local or regional company that has made significant progress toward diversifying its workforce at the management and non-management levels.

3.      Vivian C. Mason Award: for an individual or group making significant contributions through long-term service to the region by demonstrating the highest value of citizenship in promoting inter-racial understanding and cooperation.

4
.      Marian Palmer Capps Award: for an individual or group who has made significant contributions to the Hampton Roads community through the promotion of educational initiatives which support inter-racial understanding and cooperation.

5.      Jocelyn P. Goss Award: for a high school or college student who has demonstrated exceptional leadership through community service, academic achievement and/or excellence in the performing or creative arts.

“The businesses nominated for this prestigious awards program are among the best in the region. We changed the event this year because to make the dinner about those being recognized …they are the reason that this community is able to make such strides in diversity recruitment, hiring, promotion, and in multicultural outreach,” said Edith G. White, President/CEO of the Urban League of Hampton Roads, Inc.
