Cox Puts ‘Take Charge!’ into Action at the 2nd Annual National Teen Summit on Internet Safety
The 2nd Annual National Teen Summit, held by Cox Communications in partnership with The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) explored Internet safety from teenagers’ point of view. High school students representing 14 different communities serviced by Cox across the country participated in this year’s event in Washington D.C. Keith Zirkle, a rising junior at First Colonial High School in Virginia Beach, represented Cox Hampton Roads.
The Summit was led by children’s advocate John Walsh, of ‘America’s Most Wanted’ and Lauren Nelson, Miss America 2007. The focus of the discussions was to learn how teens use the Internet. The results of the most recent Internet survey by Cox and NCMEC were discussed with the teens and their parents. These surveys revealed that teens still do not see the potential harm in posting personal information and/or pictures of themselves and friends online. The importance of open communication, between parents and their children, was stressed during the discussions.
After the Summit, the teens, accompanied by their parents, went to Capitol Hill to discuss the issue with their elected representatives. Our Cox delegation met with Thelma Drake who, already aware of the issue, has begun considering ways to address it.
